Types of Chronograph Watches
They say time stops for no one, but when you wear a chronograph, you can stop time at the press of a button. In greek, chronograph can be broken down into the words for time and writer, because a chronograph offers you the power to track the flow of time so precisely, that it feels as if you could record every second. More commonly known as a stopwatch, the chronograph is a tool that goes far beyond counting out seconds. Discover the most popular types of chronograph watches, and find out what style suits you best.
Simple Chronograph
While every chronograph is a marvel of horological prowess, in its most basic form, the chronograph is both straightforward and easy to use. One of the most common watch complications, the chronograph function is often operated through use of a few simple toggles, (also known as pushers). Earlier models featured a single pusher that triggered the watch to start, stop, or reset, but modern models of chronograph utilize more toggles to increase the functionality as well as the ease of use.
Flyback Chronograph
More advanced than the simple chronograph, flyback models feature additional options, and functionality. Here, you’ll still find the two pushers that accompany modern chronographs, as well as an additional feature that allows a rapid reset to zero, for split-second timing. This gives you the option to reset your chronograph without stopping, in order to more accurately time multiple consecutive events. Many pilots swear by this style of watch, as they often find themselves in situations that require incredibly precise timing.
Rattrapante Chronograph
Not to be confused with the flyback chronograph, the rattrapante chronograph adds an additional second hand to the chronograph sub dial, and offers the ability to measure multiple events at the same time. With the addition of a third pusher, this model often starts with both second hands tracking at the same time, but has the option to start and stop the additional hand with the press of the third pusher. This feature is useful in competitions, or anywhere you need to measure dual time.
